DECT and VoWLAN

Tadiran partners with Kirk Telecom to produce the FlexAir system. This white paper from Kirk discusses both DECT (which the FlexAir is built on) and 802.11.

Carefully review your requirements when considering FlexAir or Voice over Wireless LAN (VoWLAN)

Quality - 802,11 (WiFi) networks have no QoS and operate within frequencies generally too crowded for acceptable voice performance. A half second drop will go un-noticed by your PC, but is obvious on the phone.

Handover - FlexAir supports seamless handovers between base stations, while 802.11 only supports "break-before-make" handover. Ok for data but not for voice.

Security - 802.11 supports only static WEP which allows open access to any device on the network. Additional security measures mean more cost and overhead. DECT is a proven secure technology that completely eliminates eavesdropping & impersonation via 128 authentication and ID access.

Capacity - If any data traffic exists on the 802.11 network then 3 conversations is the practical limit. FlexAir provides 4 conversations and the ability to add additional base stations in hot traffic areas (each adding 4 more conversations) which is not and option with 802.11.

Battery life - The newest WiFi handsets claim 4 hours talk-time and 60 hours standby. FlexAir handsets have 16 hours talk time and 150 hours standby. FlexAir handsets require only 20 minutes of recharge per day!
